You have probably seen videos of water beading off a hood and thought that looks incredible. Or maybe a friend got ceramic coating and now won’t stop talking about it. Either way, you’re thinking about spending $500 or more on your car and you want to know what you’re actually getting.
Here is what we tell every client who calls us about ceramic coating. No upselling, no pressure.
What ceramic coating actually is (and what it is not)
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer – typically silicon dioxide or SiO2 – that chemically bonds to your vehicle’s clear coat. Once cured, it creates a semi-permanent hydrophobic layer that repels water, dirt, bird droppings, tree sap, and UV radiation.
What it is not: a force field. It will not prevent rock chips. It will not stop someone from keying your car. It will not make your paint indestructible. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are either misinformed or trying to sell you something.
What ceramic coating genuinely does is make your paint significantly easier to maintain and dramatically more resistant to the environmental damage that Dallas weather specifically causes – UV oxidation, hard water spotting, and contaminant bonding. Maintenance still matters, though: here is how to wash and maintain a ceramic coated car so the coating actually lasts its rated life.
Why Dallas is actually one of the best cities to get ceramic coating
This is not marketing. Dallas gets 230+ days of sunshine per year. UV-A radiation is the single biggest cause of clear coat failure on vehicles over five years old. That cloudy, chalky look on older cars parked outside – that is UV damage. A professionally applied coating blocks UV at the surface level.
Then there is the hard water problem. Dallas municipal water runs around 150-200 ppm total dissolved solids. Every time your sprinkler hits your car, every time it rains and dries in the sun, those minerals etch into unprotected paint. On a ceramic-coated surface, the water beads and rolls off before the minerals can bond.
And construction dust. If you drive I-635 or I-35E, your car collects industrial fallout daily. On unprotected paint, that dust embeds into the clear coat. On ceramic coating, it sits on top and washes off with a rinse.
The honest cost breakdown
Our ceramic coating packages start at $529 for a 3-year coating on a sedan and run to $1,459 for a 10-year coating on a full-size SUV or truck. Here is what drives the price:
The coating product itself is actually a small part of the cost. What you are paying for is the preparation. Before any coating touches your paint, the surface needs to be chemically decontaminated, clay barred, and – in most cases – paint corrected. If we apply coating over swirl marks and scratches, we are locking those defects in. The coating preserves whatever condition the paint is in, good or bad.
That prep work takes 4-8 hours depending on the vehicle’s condition. A brand new car off the dealer lot might need minimal correction. A 5-year-old daily driver that has been through automatic car washes probably needs a full multi-stage paint correction before coating.
When ceramic coating is worth every dollar
If you park outside daily in DFW. If you plan to keep the vehicle more than 2-3 years. If your paint is in good condition or you are willing to invest in paint correction first. If you hate the idea of waxing every few months. In these situations, ceramic coating genuinely pays for itself in prevented damage and reduced maintenance.
When to save your money
If you are selling the car within a year. If the paint already has deep scratches, oxidation, or peeling clear coat – coating will lock in those problems, not fix them. If you garage your car and it rarely sees sun or rain. In those cases, a good exterior detail with a synthetic sealant every 4-6 months gives you solid protection at a fraction of the cost.
Questions we get every week
How long does the coating process take? Plan for a full day. We need the vehicle for 6-10 hours depending on prep requirements. We do everything at your location – we are a mobile service, so we come to your home or workplace.
Can I wash my car normally after? Wait 7 days for full curing. After that, hand wash or touchless wash only. Never take a ceramic-coated car through an automatic car wash with brushes – the brushes will not damage the coating, but the chemicals those car washes use can degrade it over time.
Do you offer a warranty? The coating manufacturer provides a warranty on the product. Our workmanship is guaranteed. If there is an issue with the application, we fix it at no cost.
Can I get ceramic coating on a new car? This is actually the best time to do it. New paint is in its best condition, so prep time is minimal, the coating bonds perfectly, and you protect your investment from day one. We detail new cars from every DFW dealership – we are used to working with fresh paint.
